Our Commitment to Patient Privacy
Each time a patient sees a physician, is admitted to a hospital, undergoes outpatient testing, fills a prescription with a pharmacist or sends a claim to a health plan, a record is made of the patient's health information. Until 1996, the confidentiality of patient health information was protected by a patchwork of state laws, which, some people argued, left gaps in the protection of patients' privacy and confidentiality. As part of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA"), Congress recognized the need for national standards for patient privacy. As a result of HIPAA's mandate, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“DHHS”) issued national patient privacy and security standards in 2000. In follow up to the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (the “HITECH Act”), which was passed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, DHHS updated those national patient privacy and security standards in 2013.
The privacy of patient health information has always been a high priority of Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center and Florida law has for many years included significant patient privacy protections. This section of our website is intended to provide our patients and their families with information about their privacy rights and our commitment to protect those rights. The information in this section of our website will be updated in the event that our privacy practices change in the future.

Authorization to Share Medical Information with Others
There may be situations in which you want your Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center medical provider to share information with third parties, such as your family members, loved ones, your other caregivers or attorney. This document outlines the policies and practices of Baptist Health System, Inc., a Florida not-for-profit corporation d/b/a Baptist Health ("Baptist_Health"), regarding the collection and use of personal information about employee, visitor, patient and general public users (collectively, "Users") of the various websites and webpages operated and maintained by Baptist Health and its affiliates (collectively, the "Baptist Health website").
To effectively monitor usage and improve the quality of the Baptist Health website, Baptist Health reserves the right to gather general information about the use of the Baptist Health website. Baptist Health may utilize server logs and industry-standard website statistics software to count the number of Users visiting the Baptist Health website and to count the number of views of particular pages, as well as to track other general usage statistics. As a general practice, Baptist Health will not track specific lawful Users' visits to the Baptist Health website. At times, Baptist Health may find it necessary or desirable to share with third-parties certain aggregate, anonymous information about overall usage of the Baptist Health website, in order to provide general information about our Internet services, sell advertising or establish sponsorships, or other business relationships. If Users voluntarily submit personally-identifiable information to Baptist Health in connection with or through the Baptist Health website, such Users should be aware that (i) various individuals at Baptist Health may see such information, (ii) Baptist Health may enter such information in its electronic databases to share with its physicians other healthcare providers and researchers, and (iii) Baptist Health may disclose such information as it determines in good faith is required by law. Baptist Health will not disclose personally-identifiable information about a User's medical condition or interests, unless it determines in good faith that such disclosure is required by law.
Users should be aware that no one, including Baptist Health, can give an absolute assurance that information intended to be maintained as private, whether transmitted via the Internet or otherwise, cannot be accessed inappropriately or unlawfully by third-parties. Baptist Health has, however, taken and will continue to take reasonable steps, such as encryption when appropriate, to ensure the secure and safe transmission of information to and from the Baptist Health website. If Users are sending Baptist Health information that is very sensitive, or includes diagnosis, medical history or financial information, such Users may want to consider sending such information via postal mail instead. Baptist Health will not distribute or sell the e-mail addresses of Users to any third-party.
Some portions of the Baptist Health website may utilize "cookie" technology. Cookies are small data files that are sent by a website and stored on an individual's computer. Cookies from the Baptist Health website may contain information about a specific User's use of the Baptist Health website, but are not used to identify or track such User personally.
